IDENTITY
Imágenes del Sur/Bilder från Söder arranges the filmfestival Latinamerica in focus in Malmö. We wanted to open the door to a continent with good movies, that are anchored in a reality that we know very little of in Sweden.
In addition to showing good quality films, we also arrange other cultural activities associated to todays society.
We especially focus on women and female filmmakers.
GOAL
We want to contribute to an increased understanding for Latinamericas history, political and financial development and the connection to todays society and also give an image of Latinamerica from a female perspective.
We want to offer a broad programme that also contains films that are overlooked by the distributers and normally don't reach the cinemas.
We want to specifically give attention to film made by women and show them in a context where the public has the opportunity to participate.
We want to create discussions between latinamerican and swedish filmmakers regarding filmissues and also society.
VISION
Latinamerica in focus is to be an anual/ settled and acknowledged festival that shows new and old films of hight quality from Latinamerica.
HISTORY
Inspired by the filmfestival Films de Femmes in Paris 2002, the idea for the project Latinamerica in focus was born. The meeting with exciting qualityfilms, both domentary and feature films, by female filmmakers from all over the world was the startingpoint for our work.
Why can't we se these films in Sweden? we asked ourselves. Very few films from Latinamerica and other southern countries are shown, and the female perspective and situation is often absent.
Latinamerica has a long history of quality filmmaking and several are directed and produced by women.
Every year we have shown around twenty latinamerican films. In addition to film, litterature, art and photography, we have also raised socio-political questions and tried to put a genderperspective to our programme.
During the years we have focused on different countries and themes.
VALUES
We want to work for a multicultural society, promote social and cultural meetings and advance exchanges between non-european countries and Sweden.
IFEMA
In 2006 the collaboration between Imagenes del Sur/Bilder från Söder and Lodge Power Project Lab initiated the "International Female Film Festival Malmö- IFEMA".
We seldom see film where the female outlook charachterizes both the story and the artistic form, further there was a lack of platform where to discuss how womens reality is portrayed in film.
LATINAMERICA IN FOCUS
In 2003 the first Film- and Culturefestival Latinamerica in Focus, was arranged. The idea was to show another image of Latinamerica than the one that is often seen in the media and to bring forward films that usually don't reach the Swedish cinemas.
We show documentaries and films and often invite filmmakers to present and discuss their work. We are especially interested in bringing attention to women who work with film.
During the years the festival has evolved. In 2009 we will also show films on Bio Centrum in Limhamn and on Kino in Lund, in addition to all the events in Malmö. We have many collaborations with cultural workers and organisations, on a local, national and international level.
Litterature and poetry has become an important part of the festival. Many writers, poets, performanceartists and well-informed lecturers are invited to broaden our views.
Because we believe that film is an excellent way to inspire and give insight, we invite schools to participate and see free film during an entire week, and we also offer additional material for teachers to continue the discussions after the festival.
